Six months in: are you on track to meet your financial goals?

At the start of the year, your financial goals probably felt clear and achievable. Maybe you planned to save more, pay down debt, improve cash flow, or grow your business revenue.

Now that you're halfway through the year, you may be wondering where things stand.

If you're feeling behind, you're not alone. Life happens. Unexpected expenses pop up. Business slows down. Priorities shift. The good news is that a mid-year financial check-in gives you the chance to make adjustments before the year ends.

The next six months can still make a big difference.

Take an Honest Look at Your Progress

The first step is simple: review your goals.

What financial goals did you set at the beginning of the year? Have you been consistently working toward them? Are you closer to achieving them than you were six months ago?

This isn't about judging yourself. It's about understanding where you are today.

Look at your savings balances, debt levels, monthly spending, and income. If you're a business owner, review your revenue, expenses, and profitability. Clear numbers give you a clear picture.

You can't improve what you don't measure.

Identify What's Working—and What's Not

Many people focus only on what went wrong. Instead, start by recognizing what's gone right.

Maybe you've reduced unnecessary spending. Maybe you've built an emergency fund. Maybe your business has increased sales.

Then identify the areas that need attention.

Are you spending more than planned? Has debt grown faster than expected? Are business expenses eating into profits?

Finding the gaps isn't a failure. It's valuable information that helps you make smarter decisions moving forward.

Adjust Your Goals if Necessary

Sometimes the goals you set in January no longer fit your current situation.

That's okay.

Financial planning should be flexible. If your circumstances have changed, your goals may need to change too.

For example, if paying off all your debt this year is no longer realistic, focus on reducing a specific amount by year-end. If saving a certain dollar amount feels out of reach, set a target that is challenging but achievable.

Progress matters more than perfection.

Create a Plan for the Second Half of the Year

Once you know where you stand, create a roadmap for the months ahead.

Focus on a few key priorities rather than trying to fix everything at once.

You might:

  • Increase monthly savings contributions
  • Create a tighter spending plan
  • Pay extra toward high-interest debt
  • Review business expenses for cost-saving opportunities
  • Improve bookkeeping and financial tracking
Small, consistent actions often create the biggest results over time.

Don't Wait Until December

One of the most common financial mistakes is waiting until the end of the year to assess progress.

By then, your options are limited.

A mid-year review gives you time to make meaningful changes. It helps you regain control, reduce stress, and move forward with confidence.

No matter where you are today, your financial situation is not fixed. The next six months are an opportunity to strengthen your finances and get closer to the future you want.

At B&M Financial Management Services, we help individuals and small business owners create practical financial plans, improve bookkeeping, and make confident money decisions.
