Your Mid-Year Money Check-In: 5 Things to Review Right Now

We are officially halfway through the year. While the first few months often fly by in a blur of resolutions and tax season, June and July provide the perfect "halftime" to pause and assess your financial health. Just like a professional sports team reviews their strategy during the break, a mid-year check-in allows you to celebrate your wins, course-correct on your losses, and finish the year strong.

If you aren't sure where to start, here are five essential things to review right now to ensure your finances stay on track.

1. Conduct a Budget Reset
It’s time to ask the big question: Where is your money actually going? Compare your actual spending over the last six months against your original January budget.
  • Identify Leaks: Look for "subscription creep" or categories where you consistently overspend.
  • Adjust for Inflation: If the cost of groceries or utilities has risen, update your budget numbers to reflect reality rather than sticking to outdated estimates.
  • Reallocate: If you saved money in one area (like travel), consider moving those funds to a category that needs a boost.
2. Perform a Savings & Emergency Fund Review
Take a close look at your savings tracker. Are you on pace to hit your annual contribution goals for your 401(k), IRA, or High-Yield Savings Account?
  • The Emergency Fund: Ensure you still have 3–6 months of expenses tucked away. If you had to dip into this fund recently, make a plan to replenish it during the second half of the year.
  • Automate Growth: If you received a raise or a bonus, consider increasing your automatic transfers to keep your savings growing.

3. Tackle Your Debt Reduction Plan
Review your debt payoff charts to see how those balances are decreasing. High-interest debt, like credit cards, should be a primary focus.
  • Check Interest Rates: With fluctuating rates, ensure you are still using the most efficient repayment method (such as the Avalanche or Snowball method).
  • Stay Aggressive: If your debt is decreasing slower than planned, look for one expense in your budget reset that you can cut to add $50 or $100 to your monthly payments.

4. QuickBooks & Business Cleanup (For Entrepreneurs)
If you run a business or side hustle, your bookkeeping can easily fall behind. Use this mid-year point for a total QuickBooks Cleanup.
  • Reconcile Accounts: Match your bank statements to your accounting software to ensure every transaction is accounted for.
  • Review Cash Flow: Look at your cash flow reports to identify which months were most profitable and where you can reduce overhead.
  • Tax Prep: Organizing your receipts and categories now will save you a massive headache come next April.

5. Revisit Your Financial Goal Checklist
Look back at your vision board or goal planner. Which milestones have you checked off?
  • Celebrate Wins: Did you pay off a student loan or reach your "Home Deposit" goal? Acknowledge that progress!
  • Adjust the Timeline: If a goal like "Buy a New Car" feels out of reach for this year, don't scrap it—just adjust the plan and keep moving forward.

Final Thought: A mid-year check-in isn't about perfection; it's about awareness. By taking an hour this week to review your numbers, you give yourself the clarity and confidence needed to finish the year financially strong.
